Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth
2010
Final declaration of the Working Group on the Rights of Mother Earth, part of the People of the World Conference on Climate Change and the rights of Mother Earth, held on 20–22 April 2010 in Cochabamba, Bolivia, with support from 241 entities worldwide. It is hoped that this draft of a universal declaration will be approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The draft consists of a preamble and four articles. The preamble recognizes the role of the planet, Mother Earth, as a source of life, and highlights the need to halt the abuse she is suffering. The first article defines Mother Earth and her relationship with all the beings that depend on her; the second details the rights of Mother Earth and all the beings are part of her; the third describes the obligations of human beings towards Mother Earth if they are to live in harmony; and the fourth contains the definitions of key terms.
