“The Firmament Sheweth His Handiwork”. Re-awakening a Religious Sense of the Natural Order
Oldmeadow, Harry2003
This document describes the general principles on which the traditional religious vision of the natural world and humankind’s role within it is based. The author argues that the loss of the spiritual – or sacred dimension – to nature, the result of the spread of modern materialistic ideologies, can only be counteracted by employing the principles that have guided the traditional understanding of the natural order throughout human history. The author’s synthesis is based on examples originating from sources such as indigenous cosmologies and the most important spiritual traditions of the world.
