Setting Science Free from Materialism
Rupert Sheldrake2013
Contemporary Western science is based on the premise that all reality is material or physical. There is no reality outside of material reality. It believes that consciousness is a by-product of the physical activity of the brain, that all matter is unconscious, and that evolution has no purpose. This materialistic worldview suffers from a serious crisis of credibility. For materialism, the main problem lies in the existence of consciousness. This article argues that globalization calls for a shift from ‘science’ to ‘the sciences’. Freeing the Western modern science from the ideology of materialism opens up new opportunities for debate and dialogue between sciences and new possibilities for research. Panpsychism offers answers worthy of being explored, as does the recognition that the mind is not limited to the brain.
