Guidelines for planning and managing mountain protected areas
Hamilton, Lawrence S.; McMillan, Linda (eds.)2004
Manual of recommendations and guidelines aimed at preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the world’s mountain regions, especially useful for managers of protected mountainous areas. The manual consists of an update and review of the 161 guidelines published in 1992 (drawn up by a workshop of experts held in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park), which also includes the contributions from the workshop held in the protected natural area of the Drakensberg mountains (South Africa) in September 2003. It is worth noting that section 5 calls for planners, managers and educators to recognize and integrate into management the sacred, spiritual and cultural values that are so often attributed to mountainous regions.
