Recommendation concerning the Safeguarding of Beauty and Character of Landscapes and Sites

Recommendation adopted at the 12th meeting of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization held in Paris on 9–12 December 1962.

The General Conference recommends that Member States implement the provisions outlined in the document concerning the protection of the beauty and character of natural sites and landscapes, their preservation and, where possible, the restoration of the appearance of the natural sites and landscapes that offer aesthetic or cultural interest or that are part of characteristic natural areas.

Thus, the Conference also calls on Member States to implement the laws or other documents designed to implement within their territories the rules and principles expressed in this recommendation. It also bids them to bring this recommendation to the attention of the authorities and bodies responsible for protecting natural sites, landscapes and nature, as well as the agencies responsible for regional planning, the promotion of tourism and young people.
