This paper describes the work of Patriarch Bartholomew I for the protection of the natural environment during the last twenty five years. This work has been done first in his own church, and subsequently in the wider society through international, inter-religious, and interdisciplinary gatherings that have gained the attention of policymakers and the mass media. Bartholomew has won wide international recognition and the title of Green Patriarch. The paper contains various insights into the Orthodox Christian worldview that direct the vision and activities of the Patriarch It is an abridged version of the Introduction chapter of the book Cosmic Grace & Humble Prayer, by the same author.
