Al Mizan: A covenant for the Earth is presented
University of Üsküdar (Turkey)26 of September 2022
Al Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth is a collaborative initiative of Muslim thought leaders from around the world under the umbrella of the Faith for the Earth Initiative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Al Mizan is an Arabic term, present in the Qur’an, which means balance and measure. The Covenant for the Earth reminds people, especially Muslim communities, of their responsibilities to protect the world’s shared natural resources and biodiversity heritage. It also addresses climate change while emphasizing the sacred purpose of respecting the natural balance of humanity according to the values upheld by Islam.
This initiative wants to help the transformation of mentalities, based on the realization that there can be no social transformation without the transformation of the mentality, and that without a social transformation it will not be possible to transform the unsustainable economic and political models. The first draft of the Covenant, presented at the University of Üsküdar (Turkey) on September 26, was consulted to more than 300 Islamic institutions around the world for comments. The final text will be presented to the Islamic Council of Environment Ministers in December and then to UNEP.
