International Day of Mother Earth: implications and responsabilities
Catalunya22 abril 2021
As we did last year, today we want to reclaim the International Mother Earth Day (officially adopted by the UN on April 22, 2009) in response to the tendency to omit ‘mother’ and designate it like Earth Day.
Common in most primordial (indigenous) worldviews, the concept of Mother Earth has also been present in the history of Western thought and art. This notion helps us open the door to the recognition of the intrinsic values of the Earth and, eventually, of its rights. At the same time, it reminds us of our filial duty to preserve its integrity and health. And to be more aware that our health depends on her health.
For this reason, the Silene Association has once again launched a campaign aimed at conservationist and ecological organizations in the Catalan speaking countries. A campaign to demand the restitution of the name Mother Earth for April 22nd. This would be a symbolism-laden gesture that could serve to begin to apply the profound implications of this concept. Today, the crisis we are experiencing makes it more necessary and urgent than ever.
