Discussing the incorporation of the crime of ecocide at the Parliament of Catalonia
Parliament of Catalonia, Barcelonauña (Barcelona)18 Jannuary 2024
The Parliament of Catalonia is processing a Proposal to present to the Congress of Deputies of Spain the Proposal for a law amending State Law 10/1995 of the Criminal Code, to incorporate the crime of ecocide into the International Criminal Court. Within the legislative procedure, the parliamentary groups decided to ask some organizations to appear to give their opinion or formulate proposals that the Parliamentary Groups can collect and incorporate into the final text of the law.
The first appearance, on January 17 at the Parliamentary Commission, was that of Ms Joho Mentha, co-founder of Stop Ecocide (telematically, in English and subtitled in Catalan) followed by Ms Maite Monpó, coordinator of the Stop Ecocidie Spain campaign and Mr Josep- Maria Mallarach, representing the Silene Association. The contribution of the representative of Silene complemented the previous two with the position of the world’s major religions, contained in the joint statement they made, two years ago, in favor of recognizing the criminal offense of ecocide, in addition to other arguments of secular spiritual ethics.
Given the alignment of parliamentary political forces, it is foreseeable that the Parliament of Catalonia will approve the proposed law by broad consensus.
