Cultural and spiritual values of protected landscapes – IUCN Category V
Barcelona, Catalonia10 October 2008
This second volume of the collection “Values of Protected Landscapes and Seascapes” produced by the Task Force on Protected Landscapes was presented on 10 October 2008 during the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.
This volume, dedicated to the cultural and spiritual values that sustain protected landscapes (i.e. category V protected areas), is a project being developed conjointly by the Task Force on Protected Landscapes and the Task Force on the Cultural and Spiritual Values of Protected Areas, both included in the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas.
Edited by Josep-Maria Mallarach of the Silene Association, this second volume includes 16 case studies chosen from different continets, cultures and spiritual traditions. Half of the case studies discuss legally protected areas that have been declared Category V sites, while the other half describes conservation areas managed in various different traditional ways.
This work was funded by the Fundació Caixa Catalunya and GTZ. The Spanish version (Valores culturales y espirituales de los Paisajes Protegidos) is expected to be published before the end of 2008.
