Honoring the Memory of Michael Iafrate

We never had the opportunity to meet Michael Iafrate personally, but he nevertheless deeply inspired us. His attitude of gratitude and reverence for nature, a nature that is part of us and that reflects the immense love of creation was very uplifting.

Michael Iafrate had a gift for prophetic words, as he made clear in ‘The Telling Takes us Home: Taking Our Place in the Stories that Shape Us‘ a pastoral letter open to the social actors of the Appalachian Mountains, a depressed region of the Eastern US that has been the victim of coal mine looting for several decades, leaving a aftermath of social misery and environmental disaster.

From the other side of the world, Silene wants to honor the memory of Michael Iafrate, and share the grief with those grassroots communities that, like the Catholic Committee of the Appalachians – of which Michael was co-coordinator – stand as advocates for socail and environmental justice. His example of commitment and coherence will always remain alive among us.
