Sikh Faith Statement on the Environment

The statement addresses the meaning of the global ecological crisis, exposes the Sikhism proposal of solution, based on the understanding of the unity between spirit and matter and the interconnection of all Creation, in a universe of innumerable galaxies; it exposes Sikh ideals, the need for the practice of philosophy, spiritual discipline, the institutions of Sangat, Pangat and Langar, the equality of men and women, and the sharing of resources communally.

This statement was compiled under the guidance of Sri Singh Sahib Manjit Singh, the Jathedar of Anandapur (one of the five spiritual and temporal leaders of Sikhism) and Sri Akhal Takhat Sahib, his deputy. It was printed, along with Statements from ten other religions, in the book “Faith in Conservation” by Martin Palmer and Victoria Finlay, published by the World Bank in 2003.
