Malta Statement of the fourth seminar of the Delos Initiative

Statement agreed by the participants of the fourth seminar of the Delos Initiative (of the IUCN Specialist Group on Cultural and Spiritual Values ​​of Protected Natural Areas) on Sacred Natural Sites in Technologically Developed Countries, held in Malta from 24 to 26 April 2017. Highlights include sections focusing on natural spaces of spiritual importance linked to Islam. The call for the comprehensive protection of these natural spaces, often preserved by local communities, calls for a comprehensive understanding of all their dimensions, overcoming the artificial barriers between the natural, cultural and spiritual, adopting participatory approaches and trusting local authorities and local communities (including minorities and marginalized groups) to better address the needs of their custodians and gain broader local support.
