Initiative to achieve international legislation recognizing the crime of ecocide
United Kingdom & The Netherlands2022
Stop Ecocide International Ltd (SEI), was set up in the UK in 2017 with the aim of driving a public campaign to make ecocide a crime in the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This campaign grew very quickly and two years later the Stop Ecocide Foundation (SEF) was created in the Netherlands to support the growing movement. SEI and SEF operate in close collaboration: SEI is responsible for strategy, policy, direction and general communications, while SEF receives and distributes funds and is the body in charge of relevant projects such as the Panel of ‘Independent Experts for the Legal Definition of Ecocide.
The vision of this initiative is to enable a new international legal framework to protect the Earth and all its current and future inhabitants by establishing criminal liability for the widespread destruction of ecosystems, so that human stewardship is consciously aligned with a widely recognized moral code of respect, peace and duty of care for life. Based on the principle: “first do no harm”, it aims to provide protection against ecocide and build a bridge to a habitable world.
