Bethany Beyond the Jordan – Baptism site of Jesus

The documentary exposes the rediscovery of the baptism site of Jesus of Nazareth (Al-Maghtas), on the eastern banks of the Jordan River, at the end of the last century. Based on a series of interviews with the main actors, the historical accounts of the first Christian pilgrims, the multiple archaeological evidences (dated between the 4th and 15th centuries), and the traditions that come together, the place that has been recognized by all Christian churches. It includes two archaeological areas: Jabal Mar-Elias, the hill of the prophet Elijah, and the area of the primitive churches dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, near the river. The complex was declared a World Heritage Site in 2015 by UNESCO, and a National Park by the Jordanian government. Since then, it has become an important place of pilgrimage.
