Territories of life. Exploring vitality of governance for conserved and protected areas
Dr. Grazia Borrini-Feyerabend, co-founder, member of the Council of Elders, and Global Coordinator during the first 12 years of the Consortium’s life, has written this volume for custodians of territories of life and their allies, providing several uncommon offers: an introduction to the characteristics of governance vitality and its ties with territories of life, a review of historical events and policies dealing with community conservation, and tools for self-assessing governance vitality and promoting it as part of national policies. This is the most complete document available on the subject of ‘territories of life.’ Its analysis of the opportunities and pitfalls of the current recognition crescendo of the conservation value of custodianship by Indigenous Peoples and local communities is specific, timely, and—for some—may also be surprising.
The beautifully illustrated, large format, 375 pages volume, is available for free as a PDF in English at https://volume.territoriesoflife.org/ and will soon be available in Spanish and French. This publication was sponsored by the ICCA Global Support Initiative and produced with contributions from many Consortium Members and Honorary members, particularly Tilman Jaeger
