Meditations of John Muir: Nature’s Temple
Highland, Chris (ed., comp.)2001
Anthology of 60 brief texts about nature written by John Muir with an introduction by the editor. Each text is accompanied by a quote from a wide range of sacred writings by saints and savants from around the world. The thought of John Muir (1838-1914) was and still is very influential in the ecologist movements in the USA and Canada. His ideas were highly important in the setting up of the first North-American national parks and in the origins of the Sierra Club, and also inspired many organisations who have fought ever since to protect rivers, forests, mountains and beaches. Muir’s work is full of personal experiences that depict his wonder at, reverence of and union with the natural world. His ideas connect with nineteenth-century transcendentalist currents of thought and the spirituality of North-American indigenous people.
