Time for God’s Creation: An appeal to the churches in Europe
Schönstein, Isolde; Vischer, Lukas (eds.)2006
Document produced by the Assembly of the European Christian Environmental Network held in Geneva in 2006, during which it was proposed that a period of the Christian calendar ¬¬- from 1 September to the second Sunday in October – be devoted to celebrating a “Time for Creation”. This period thanking God for creation should be considered as an opportunity for all churches in Europe to join forces to work towards the protection of the environment. The document contains explanations of the origins of the proposal, which date from a pronouncement in 1898 by the then Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Dimitris I, as well as various reflections on this subject, the response at international and national levels and from within the European Christian Environmental Network, and future lines of environmental work within European churches. Finally, it includes a number of prayers and hymns related to the Third European Ecumenical Assembly held at Sibiu (Romania).
