Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted by the General Conference of the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held in Paris on 3–21 October 2005. This document aims to raise awareness of the value of cultural diversity and the need to preserve it as part of mankind’s common heritage. It also recognizes the importance of traditional knowledge as a source of both intangible and material wealth and the need to ensure that is adequately protected and promoted, a task that has significant implications regarding the management of natural resources. All participating states assume a series of rights and obligations in order to fulfil the objectives and principles set out in the convention, based on mechanisms for promoting and protecting cultural expressions.
