An Appeal for Joint Commitment in Science and Religion
Global Forum on Religion and Ecology1990
In 1989, twenty two Nobel laureates and leading scientists spearheaded a joint appeal to the religious and scientific communities for environmental action. Their statement, entitled “Preserving and Cherishing the Earth: An Appeal for Joint Commitment in Science and Religion”, was presented on January 1990 to the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders Conference in Moscow, where it was signed by two hundred and seventy-one well-known spiritual leaders from 83 countries. The appeal concludes stating that “The environmental crisis requires radical changes not only in public policy, but in individual behaviour. The historical record makes clear that religious teaching, example, and leadership are powerfully able to influence personal conduct and commitment”.
