Jordan River Covenant: International and interreligious restoration statement

This declaration urges governments of the three countries sharing the basin of the river Jordan (i.e Israel, Jordan and Palestine) to cooperate both economically and politically in the ecological rehabilitation of the Lower Jordan River.

Over the last 50 years, 96% of the river’s flow has been diverted and the water that remains is highly contaminated by untreated sewage. Valley wetlands have dried up, water tables are falling and half of its biodiversity has been lost.

Organizations, individuals, members of civil society, religious and community leaders state that this landscape is of universal ecological, cultural and spiritual importance and pledge to work together to fulfill the ideas expressed in this statement.
