Seminar on commons and pastoralism in the Catalan Pyrenees
Boí, Catalan Pyrenees (Spain)27 March 2015
On March 27th took place, on the headquarters of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, in Boí, Catalonia, Spain, a Seminar on common uses and pastoralism, organized by Fundació del Món Rural and Institut per al Desenvolupament i la Promoció de l’Alt Pirineu i Aran (IDAPA).
The aim of the conference was to discuss and debate on socioeconomic benefits of common rangelands for villages that have traditionally been its beneficiaries. Most of Catalonian extensive livestock still grazes in common grasslands; therefore, it’s necessary to adapt the reality of these commons to the necessities of nowadays. The seminar discussed the current status of the commons rangelands, its evolution over time, and how management would have to adapt to current challenges, considering that the management of many of these commons is still based on ancient legal systems.
The result of the seminar was collected in two documents (both in Catalan). The long version includes the conclusions of the seminar with the conclusions from two other previous related activities: A “Seminar about commons”, celebrated in Sort (Catalonian Pyrenees, Spain) on 2002 and a “Study about commons on Alt Pirineu and Aran region, 2008” promoted by IDAPA. The short version only contains the conclusions of conference on Boí: “The commons: an approximation from extensive livestock”.
