A IUCN Theme on Culture, Spirituality and Conservation

Within the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, a Theme on Culture, Spirituality and Conservation (CSC) has been created, focusing on increasing understanding of the relationships between culture, biocultural heritage, spirituality and equitable governance in conservation, sustainable development, and environmental and cultural policy. The Theme will provide technical advice on evolving norms, policies and the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and other protection efforts, as well as assessments of proposed natural heritage sites, mixed natural and cultural sites, or cultural landscapes with attention to the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples and local communities.

The Theme will also explore themes of spirituality, sacred and cultural sites and faith based movements related to conservation and climate change through specialist groups or topic specific taskforces or working groups.Kevin Chang, the Chinese/Irish chair, was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu in State of Hawai’I (USA). He is an attorney musician who does network movement work and use the music to provoke or inspire. He works for Kuaʻāina Ulu ʻAuamo (KUA) which means “grassroots growing through shared responsibility” the acronym of our name means backbone. KUA is a member organisation of the IUCN.
