Davi Kopenawa Yanomami receives the Right Livelihood Award
Stockolm, Sweden 4 December 2019
The Yanomami shaman Davi Kopenawa (also know as the Dalai Lama of the rainforest) received the Right Livelihood Award, also called “Alternative Nobel Prize”, which ‘honors and support corageous people solvingglobal problems’. The ceremony has taken place in Stockholm and has been the culmination of a ten-day program of celebrations in Germany, Switzerland and Sweden.
In his acceptance speech, the 4th december 2019, Davi said: “I want to help my indigenous brothers by asking the international authorities to pressure the Government of Brazil to proceed to the demarcation of the lands of other indigenous peoples. I have always fought for the rights of my people, the Yanomami, and the Ye’kwanas. This award is a new weapon to reinforce the struggle of our people. ”
Davi Kopenawa led a campaign for his people over twenty years to protect their Amazon territory. Together with the Yanomami territory of Venezuela, it constitutes the largest area of tropical rainforest in the world that is under indigenous control.
